Hello…

The names Sam.  Did you need something?

Commander Shepard. Nice to meet you, Sam.

Some H3 fuels cells would be nice right about now— or even better, a portal back to my native dimension. But I’m going to assume you don’t have either of those on hand and go with the safer answer of ‘not right now.’

Bonjour, mademoiselle. An’ who jus’ might you be?

Commander Jane Shepard, Spectre of the Galactic Council.

And what about you?

Remy LeBeau. Cajun, thief, an’ X-Man extraordinaire.

X-Man. That’s either a commando group or a boyband, by my guess.

I know what you mean. It’s hard to tell sometimes.

It does sound similar, and I’d be happy to show it to you. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell I’m stuck here. I didn’t come to this world by choice, it just happened. The most I can hope for is a one-way trip back.

We use an isotope of Helium called Helium-3. It’s used in nuclear fusion reactors that power the better part of the galaxy.

The humans here on Earth will be using the same tech we do in around two-hundred years…!? “I’m sorry that you’re stuck here…”

“…but nuclear fusion’s what we use!” He didn’t know what chemicals were used or even how it worked, but he knew the name. “…humans sure are scary. And they’ve only been around for 2000-ish years at that point!? It’s a good thing we’re in different galaxies, then.”

Two-thousand…?

No, James. The anatomically modern human showed up about 200,000 years ago, and the behaviorally modern human showed up 50,000 years ago. The human race didn’t spawn from the dust at the transition from Before Christ to Anno Domini.

Don’t you get bored?

It changes from day to day. Sometimes it’s good guys gone bad or good old-fashioned terrorists, and other times it’s armies of heretical robots. The main threat is a species- if they can be called that- of organic-synthetic hybrids called Reapers. They’re more powerful than they sound. The Geth- another species of AI’s- worship them as gods.

It does start to get boring, a bit. But the future me says things get a lot more interesting for me, later.

*After The Commander’s story he starts to get really excited.*

That is a whole lot less bland than what’s going on in my world! Reapers? That sounds menacing! Good luck in your fight! *He thought about it for a second.* If you ever need help, you can call me anytime! *Gives a thumbs up*

Thanks, Sonic.

It’s 2011 on Earth where I am now. Almost 2012. That’s almost a 200 year difference. Humanity can accomplish quite a bit in two centuries.

What’s it like? It’s hard to say, I’ve never had to explain it before. It’s cleaner. Everything is a little more sleek and beautiful. There are ads everywhere, and most of them know you by name. Flying cars, star ships, pirates, criminals… the technology is different. But humanity? Humanity stays the same.

“I can only hope that all of that progress is good…” In fact, Lylat was lucky to have turned out so well. Although, the way she’s describing her home, it seems like there’s quite a few similarities.

I wonder if Earth’ll look anything like Corneria? “Now I’m really interested in going to, uh, New Earth. It sounds kinda like home—the planet I’m from, the buildings’re so tall you can’t tell them apart from the sky, and I think I remember going to one city somewhere in the north where different sections of the city were sort of…layers?”

“The roads are elevated, and there’s lots and lots of plant life all over the planet, and the water’s way cleaner than here…” He seems to really enjoy talking about his home. “What kind of fuel source d’you use?” I’ll have to remember all this so I can tell Slippy about it. He’d be foaming at the mouth over hearing about foreign technology.

I know what you mean. It’s hard to tell sometimes.
